How to reach the castles....

Hohenschwangau castle

The Castle can be reached by horse-drawn carriage or on foot.

• Horse carriage to Hohenschwangau castle:

Carriage-stop valley: in front of the Ticket Center

Carriage-stop castle: directly at the Hohenschwangau castle


Uphill: € 4,50   Downhill: € 2,00

You pay directly to the horse carriage driver.

Duration of the ride: approx. 10 minutes.  

Important note: During the winter opening hours of the castle, there is no carriage transfer to Hohenschwangau castle.  

Attention! From April 7th 2017, the carriage transfer to Hoheschwangau castle will be in operation again without restrictions.

• Walk to Hohenschwangau castle:  

You can also reach Hohenschwangau Castle on foot. The respective paths are signposted.

Approximate walking time uphill from the Ticket Center to Hohenschwangau Castle: 20 minutes.   

Neuschwanstein castle

The Castle Neuschwanstein can be reached by shuttle-bus, by horse-drawn carriage or on foot.

• Shuttle-Bus to Neuschwanstein castle:

Bus stop valley: at the "Alpsee" parking area P4 (below Hohenschwangau Castle)

Bus stop castle: Mary's Bridge (above Neuschwanstein Castle)


Uphill: € 1,80   Dwonhill: € 1,00

Up- and downhill: € 2,60

You pay at the cashier at the bus station or directly to the bus driver. 

Important note: The bus does not go directly to Neuschwanstein castle. There is a steep 15 minutes walking from the bus-stop-castle to the entrance of Neuschwanstein castle. "Mary's" bridge is 5 minutes walking from the bus-stop-castle. Pets are not allowed in the bus-shuttle. The shuttle bus only operates in suitable weather conditions (no snow or ice).


• Horse carriages to Neuschwanstein castle:

You pay directly to the horse carriage driver.

Duration of the ride: approx. 20 minuten.  

Important note: The horse carriages do not drive directly to the main entance of the Neuschwanstein castle. You need to walk approx. 10 minutes uphill from the carriage-stop to the entrance of the castle.

The horse carriages run the whole year around.

• Walk to Neuschwanstein castle:  

You can also reach Neuschwanstein Castle on foot. Just follow the signs. 

Approximate walking time uphill from the Ticket Center to the Neuschwanstein Castle: 40 minutes.  


• The transportation campanies are independent and different private companies. They run independently according to the demand of the visitors, but without schedule. Please note, that you are responsible for your own schedule.

• The horse carriages and the shuttle-buses cannot be reserved.

• The shuttle-bus is unsuitable for mobility-impaired guests, since the path from the "Mary's" bridge (Marienbrücke) down to the Neuschwanstein Castle is very steep. We recommend to use the horse carriage to Neuschwanstein castle. From the terminal-stop below the castle you need to go /rive uphill 5-10 minutes the main entrance of the castle. Please note, that the horse carriage has no ramp. 

• During all holidays and specially during the summer months and around Christmas / New Year, there are considerable waiting times at the bus-stops and carriage-stops. Therefore, you have to calculate enough time for possible queues at the departure-stops.

• You can use the transport facilities even without an entrance ticket for the castles.
